[E033] Color Preference Mixes

Sept, 2023 - release:

The Color Preference Mixes [E033] is the latest project from EBiT™, a collective emerging to evolve the culture of mental health in the fashion community. E033 presents a collection of six dopamine releasing unique frequency music mixes, each created in collaboration with an emerging next generation DJs. The six artists are Nunguja, Lawrence Lee, Broodoo Ramses, Mohajer, Why Be and Collo Awata. The timing of the project serves as an artistic antidote to the seemingly ever-increasing stress and anxiety levels felt by the fashion community at once returning from August holidays and heading directly into the imminent, intense working schedule over the fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris.

The music mixes amplify the artistic freedom of each of the six DJs – be that house, drum & bass, ambient, hip hop, techno, soul - yet all are bound by two common elements. One is the integration of two anchor tracks 'Have You Been Good To Yourself' by Johnnie Frierson, and 'Your Love' by Frankie Knuckles. The two anchor tracks have been selected specifically for lyrics such as 'I can't let go', 'don't make me wait too long', 'have you been gettin' your proper rest', and ‘a lot of people, they work too hard, a lot of people, depend on drugs' - as reference points to our emotions and state of mental health.

The second common factor for all the mixes is that of the six different colors – red, orange, yellow, blue, green and violet – one for each DJ, one for each mix. The colors act as the inspiration point for the project, reflection point for each DJ, and the cover images for each mix. The Color Preference Mixes [E033] project was inspired by the obsession of EBIT™ into an historical study about the color preferences of mentally ill people titled ‘The Color Preference in the Insane’ which was created in 1931 by Siegfried E. Katz of the New York state psychiatric institute.

Reference Studios, the progressive communications and creative agency, curated the six DJs ensuring a culturally relevant and up-coming group of talented artists:

Red - Nunguja - experimental, soul, ambient

Orange - Lawrence Lee - experimental, pop, IDM, soul

Yellow - Broodoo Ramses - drum & bass, hip hop, footwork,

Blue - Mohajer - trance, house, techno, soul

Green - Why Be - experimental, drum & bass, rock, ambient, jazz, R&B

Violet - Collo Awata - experimental, house, hip hop

As part of a fluid and ongoing collaboration with EBIT™, the esteemed design duo M/M (Paris) have created the artwork for the cover image for each of The Color Preference Mixes [E033]. In addition to the visual identity of EBIT™, M/M (Paris) were also responsible to create the cover image artwork for previous music mixes from EBIT™ projects involving renowned artists Michel Gaubert, Johnny Jewel, Soo Joo Park and DJ John Digweed.

With regards to ‘The Color Preference in the Insane’ research study from 1931, the results of the study formed the basis of various aspects in the surroundings of mental health patients. For example, the color of doctors and nurses’ uniforms, the color of the paint on the walls, and the color of the flowers in the gardens. The report is packed with tidbits that beg, even now, for further analysis:

· 38% of schizophrenics and manic depressives, each, gave first preference to blue, and 42% of all other patients

· Orange and yellow were also best liked by manic depressives; green by schizophrenics; and violet by all others.
